Pakistan is close to concluding contract negotiations for a third Hualong-One reactor from China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC), but with the country awash in excess power supply and a second Hualong-One at Karachi expected on line next year, it's unclear when work on this third pressurized water reactor at Chashma might begin. It's already evident that Islamabad's long-standing aim of achieving 8.8 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2030 — up from 2.3 GW of net capacity today — will not be met.
