MARKET INSIGHT: Asian Spot LNG Market at a Crossroads

Asian spot LNG markets are at a critical juncture. Prices have smashed record after record over the past few weeks, with the Japan Korea Marker, Asia’s de facto benchmark, topping $56 per million Btu on Oct. 6 — the equivalent of oil at around $320 per barrel.

All eyes are on lack of Russian gas, but high prices are prompting a number of US politicians to call for a halt, or at least cuts, to US LNG exports.
