China's city-gas distributor Shenzhen Gas has signed a long-term LNG supply deal with BP. The deal marks the latest in a string of contracts signed by Chinese state firms and second-tier buyers. The deal underscores China’s growing appetite for LNG as the country shifts toward cleaner-burning fuels, despite soaring prices, and becomes the world's No. 1 LNG importer.

The licensing round will provide a litmus test for investor interest in one of Africa's most unstable countries.
