Late-Week Rally Pushes US Winter Contracts Back Above $5

A $5 handle for winter month US gas futures contacts proved stickier than bears might have thought given waning cooling loads and a 0.4 billion cubic foot per day downtick in US exports from the previous week. A two-session 33.5¢ surge by October gas, which ended the week with a 16.4¢ gain Friday to close at $5.14 per million Btu, rebooted the speculative narrative that a cold winter could send US prices markedly higher in the months ahead.

Gas production in Oklahoma continues a steady decline from its 8 Bcf/d peak in 2019, but a reversal could be brewing.
