Algeria's Tight Energy, Political Spot

A chapter in Algerian history appeared to close this month with the death of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. A country tightly controlled by a military and security elite known as “le pouvoir” and bolstered by hydrocarbon revenues now faces an uncertain future amid demands for profound political change and pressure to shift to a low-carbon economy. Algeria still has cards to play as this new energy dawn breaks, but it will need a government to do the previously unthinkable and tackle the structural economic reforms needed.
