Aukus Shakes Up World Order

The US pivot to Asia has been long in the making. But its arrival has caused shock waves. Last week’s China-focused Australia-UK-US (Aukus) security pact to supply nuclear-powered submarines to Australia jolted Europe — in particular France, which saw its own $66 billion submarine contract with Australia fall apart. The move tore up assumptions about the primacy of the trans-Atlantic alliance. That alliance and other post-World War II institutions are being challenged by new structures emerging in the era of extreme US competition with China.
