Winter is coming — and it looks likely to be grim in Europe, where soaring natural gas and carbon prices have pushed wholesale power prices to multiyear highs. In the UK, some small electricity suppliers have already gone bust, with more set to follow, and energy intensive fertilizer producers have shut down. Governments are scrambling to react, but few market-watchers expect gas or carbon prices to fall back to earth.
