A multibillion-dollar energy deal signed with TotalEnergies on Sep. 5 is a potential game changer for Iraq, particularly its long-neglected gas sector. The integrated project, whose initial five-year capital expenditure is put at $10 billion, covers oil production, water injection infrastructure and solar power. But its central component is to capture and process more than 40% of the associated gas that Iraq now burns, at a stroke providing vital supply for power generation, limiting reliance on costly Iranian imports and shrinking the country's carbon footprint.

A megadeal struck with TotalEnergies could free Iraq from years of oil sector drift, according to Energy Intelligence analysis.
