Save for later Print Download Share LinkedIn Twitter Swedish automaker Volvo and battery maker Northvolt have struck a joint-venture partnership to develop better batteries for electric vehicles and build a huge battery production facility or gigafactory in Sweden. A research and development center is due to open next year, while a gigafactory should start producing batteries in 2026 with capacity output set for up to 50 gigawatt hours per year. Volvo Cars -- which is Chinese owned -- is aiming for 50% of sales by 2025 to be electric and will sell only electric cars from 2030, dropping all hybrid, gasoline and diesel models from its lineup. The company plans to use green steel for its autos, which should reduce carbon emissions from the manufacturing process (NE Jun.17'21).
