Gazprom Sets Sights High on Shtokman Field
As the mystery thickens over the future of the first phase of the Shtokman gas development in the Barents Sea, Russia’s state Gazprom has already started to work on a plan to implement the second and the third phases of the project, aimed at ramping up output to a massive 71 billion cubic meters a year. (Thursday, February 4, 2010)
Kazakhstan Warns Western Majors Over Taxes
The president of Kazakhstan has warned the major Western oil companies operating in the republic that the long-term contracts that they signed in the investor-friendly 1990s are not sacrosanct and that they should be prepared to pay higher taxes. But the companies, which locked horns with the government when it imposed an oil export tariff two years ago, are in no mood to jettison the tax stability clauses that are the backbone of their contracts. State champions Rosneft and Gazprom both reported net profit falls of 36% this week -- as Russia itself posted its largest GDP decline since 1994 -- but the two companies will be confident they have now turned the corner. (Thursday, February 4, 2010)
